Audience Dialogue is a consultancy, formed in 1999 by Dennis List. Our specialty is media research, in the broadest sense, covering evaluation, marketing, and futures assessment.
Audience Dialogue is based in Adelaide, South Australia, but a lot of our work is in or relates to developing countries. In Australia we mostly do strategy development analysis, marketing and communications research - evaluating the success of marketing and communications between organizations and their stakeholders and recommending improvements - and internet-related research, planning and evaluation, such as website performance. Internationally, we work mostly with media and aid agencies, training staff on marketing and audience research, and evaluating communications projects.
The methods we use include:
We work for communicators: mainly in broadcasting, publishing, the arts, education, government, and the internet. To summarize our approach in one sentence: we work with our clients, not for them - to help them communicate with their audiences, not to them. For more detail, see the pages on our
Audience Dialogue was founded by Dr Dennis List: a social scientist, who has been working in audience research and related areas since the 1970s, for media of all types: TV, radio, print, events, and internet. This probably makes him one of the world's most widely experienced audience researchers. Dennis has more than 20 years' experience at senior level, in each of these areas:
He was the Audience Research Manager for Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 1989 to 1998, and manager of the ABC subsidiary Media Scan Research: one of Australia's first market research groups to gain quality accreditation with the Market Research Society of Australia.
He planned and carried out research projects in a wide variety of countries in South-East Asia, the Pacific region, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He held an MA in social psychology, a medal-winning MBA, and PhD in scenario planning. When not managing Audience Dialogue, he was a part time lecturer in marketing at the University of South Australia. He has also lectured at postgraduate level in response-based marketing, scenario planning, research for innovations, and the commercialization of science and technology, as well as supervising the research projects of Masters' degree students. He is the author of several books on research and marketing methods, including Know Your Audience and Participative Marketing for Local Radio- both available on this website.
He was prominent in Market Research Society of Australia, having been South Australian president, and national board member. He is also a member of the Australasian Evaluation Society and the World Futures Studies Federation. More about Dennis List: a narrative CV.

We don't think of them as clients, but as associates or partners. We prefer to work with people, rather than for them: creating a useful dialogue, not simply delivering findings. Here's a list of some of our our best-known partners.
